Welcome To Moss Park

Welcome to Toronto’s Moss Park neighbourhood!

Moss Park is a small residential neighbourhood in downtown Toronto, west of Regent Park and part of Ward 27. The area is typically considered to be between Jarvis and Parliament Streets, south of Dundas. Larger concepts of the area include Corktown, Garden District, as well as a portion of Cabbagetown. Moss Park was once the heart of Toronto’s industrial area and the homes in the area were built to supply living spaces for those workers. in the 1960’s many of the homes and buildings were then demolished to make way for the Moss Park Public Housing Project, and the area surrounding this housing project is knows as Moss Park today.

This neighbourhood may be a little rough around the edges, but it has a sense of community and many members of the community are dedicated to bettering the neighbourhood. For instance only in Moss Park will you find a year-round produce market inside of a shipping container. The first of its kind! What makes it even more unique is the market is run purely on donations and operates on a pay-what-you-can model, so that fresh healthy food is accessible to everyone.

There is an abundance of restaurants, pubs, diners, and more here. The Eaton Centre and Yonge-Dundas Square are just a few blocks away from your doorstep. Ryerson University is a 10-minute walk away, as is the George Brown St. James campus. It’s hard to get bored living around here because there’s always something to do!

Your Typical Neighbour

This neighbourhood may be a little rough around the edges, but honestly, it’s a one-of-a-kind living experience. The area is dominated by public housing projects, apartment complexes, and student housing – so you really have a diverse crowd of people here. The main park offers a recreational centre, tennis courts, and mobile safe injection sites tend to pop up here. Your typical neighbour might be a young professional new to the city, a Ryerson or George Brown student, or a big Kim’s Convenience fan – the actual store is in this ‘hood!

What We Love

Location! Moss Park is close to just about everything. You can walk anywhere downtown and wherever you can’t walk, there is the TTC

What We Don’t Love

Even though gentrification is occurring here, there are still some interesting characters in this hood and the roughness is still visible.

The Real Estate Scoop

Moss Park can be polarizing, but it’s a true urban Toronto mix – even from a real estate perspective. It’s super central – so all the services and conveniences of the downtown core are at your fingertips. It’s also very diverse–ethnically, socioeconomically, and architecturally–so the whole range that is Toronto is on display. If you prefer a more homogenous (some might argue sanitized) version of the city, then this may not be the right place for you. However, for serious urbanites, Moss Park offers everything from rougher multi-unit income properties to some of the edgiest condos and warehouse conversion projects in the city. (Check out Stonecutters Lofts, Boiler Factory Lofts, Glass House Lofts, and Richard Bigley Lofts for great examples.)

Transit

501 Queen Street and 505 Dundas Street streetcar routes operate east-west in the neighbourhood. Bus routes include the 75 Sherbourne along Sherbourne from Rosedale to Queen’s Quay and the 65 Parliament Street bus from Castle Frank subway station south to the Esplanade. Commuters have easy access to the Gardiner via Jarvis and parliament and to the DVP.
