The Massey Harris Lofts is a skillfully repurposed industrial building that houses 45 units over 5 storeys. Constructed in 1883, the building once housed The Massey Harris farm equipment manufacturing company headquarters, and was designed by the same architect who would later go on to design Old City Hall.
Today the building bears both hard and soft lofts (the top floors) ranging in size from 473 to 1077 square feet. Converted in 2003, much care was taken to preserve the original red brick and yellowed wooden posts that enrich the building’s character. Bathrooms in some suites were created out of the old payroll vaults, complete with vaulted metal ceilings, and radiant heating in the floors is found throughout. New construction of two-storey penthouses with large terraces were added on top. Many units have floor plans that rise or fall by a few feet here and there, a creative way to graft things like modern plumbing onto a 150-year-old building.
Located on the border between the Liberty Village and Niagara neighbourhoods, the Massey Harris Lofts is adjacent to Massey Harris Park, a one-acre urban oasis that meshes natural grasses with intersecting pathways and boardwalks along with a small children’s water feature. The King Street streetcar provides simple access to transit (when you’re able to fit – it’s the busiest line in the city!) and neighbouring Niagara and King West offer daily conveniences in spades. What We Don’t: The lowest units at Massey Harris, although they have outdoor space and the most character with plenty of old brick, are partially below grade and so can be darker. The penthouse units, although bright and furnished with balconies, are actually newly constructed…so you have to choose between character and outdoor space.
