As part of our Agent Spotlight series, today we’re talking with Nicole Harrington, our Mississauga/Oakville/West GTA agent.
Why did you get into real estate?
I finished my business degree and the day after my final exam went right into the job I had wanted since I started university, in pharmaceutical category buying. It was only a few weeks before the initial excitement wore off and I realized that the profession I had been dreaming of throughout my schooling was actually not the right fit for me at all – I hated being stuck behind a desk all day, doing what seemed like the same thing, over and over.
Real estate had always been a career that interested me, but I was so focused on getting my degree and the corporate job I thought I needed that I had never really considered it fully. My [now] husband pushed me to look into it, and after a few informational interviews with some top agents, I decided that being a REALTOR seemed to fit more with my personality than what I was currently doing. I was scared about jumping in, so as I was completing my license, I got a part-time weekend job at a real estate firm so I could get my feet wet with the industry.
Leaving the cushy corporate job to go into a profession with so much uncertainty was one of the scariest things I’ve ever done, but it has been the best and most rewarding choice I could have ever made. I couldn’t imagine not spending my days with my incredible clients helping and guiding them to make better real estate decisions.
What did you do before becoming an agent?
Worked in Pharmaceutical Category Management (see above!)
What’s it like being on the BREL team?
I honestly couldn’t imagine ever doing real estate any other way ever again. BREL is like my home away from home – you feel so supported in everything that you do, and everyone on the team is so incredible. I’ve only been with BREL for a short time now, but my experience so far has been unbelievable: the team was so welcoming, and everyone is always willing to lend a helping hand. Mel and Brendan are such amazing leaders, and it’s been great to be able to share in their forward-thinking vision about real estate.
Not only is it amazing for me, but it’s a great opportunity for my clients as well. Everything that we do on the BREL team, in my opinion (although maybe my opinion is a little biased, haha), is unmatched. My clients are getting my expertise and help, but also the backing of this team comprised of top Toronto agents, our own design and staging team, advertisers and marketing professionals, and even our very own handyman. As an agent, I’m blown away by what I can offer, and since joining BREL, my clients have been just as impressed.
What do you love most about buying and selling homes?
I love the negotiation aspect to any deal – being able to strategize to get the best for my clients feels like a game of mental chess, and I love to win!
Tell us about where you live.
I live in Clarkson (south Mississauga) with my hubby, fur baby (Kiwi) and my most recent family addition and the love of my life – my son Liam. We currently live in a condo townhouse walking distance to the Clarkson Go Station and walkable to the strip along Lakeshore (Clarkson has a ton of great restaurants to check out!), but that will probably change in the short term (new baby means lack of space and desire for a backyard!). But, we love South Mississauga so will likely stay very close to where we are now.
What does ‘home’ mean to you?
Personally, home is a place where you are happiest – whatever that may be. Professionally, home is somewhere you want to lay down your roots for a period of time.
What’s your craziest real estate story?
Probably one of my more recent sales – I helped an amazing family in Europe purchase a Toronto property without ever actually meeting them in person, and without them ever seeing the property. It was such an incredible feeling that we were able to create such a bond just over Skype that they were able to trust me in making such a large purchase on their behalf.
In 25 words or less, what’s your best advice for a Toronto home Buyer?
To get the best price: be able to move quickly, and have a firm understanding of what you want.
In 25 words or less, what’s your best advice for a Toronto home Seller?
Know your value and where you stand in relation to other area homes and price accordingly.
What we ❤️ best about Nicole:
From Melanie (Broker/Owner at the BREL team):
While Nicole may be the newest BREL team member, she’s fit in so well it feels like she’s been a BREL forever (I swear, that’s a compliment). There’s so much old-school thinking in our industry, that it’s rare and exciting to find someone who shares the same values and vision as us – and it’s exciting to be taking that to Mississauga and Oakville. We love the complete dedication that Nicole gives to her clients and her ability to analyze data AND people is a huge coup for her clients come negotiation time. She’s so passionate about life in the West GTA…she’s almost convinced this downtowner-forever to consider it. And last, but certainly not least, I’ve loved watching Nicole become a mother…she literally bursts with love for Liam. ❤️
