About Toy Factory Lofts - 43 hanna, toronto, ontario

The Toy Factory Lofts are a winning result of a losing battle for Canada’s oldest toy company. Founded in 1926, Irwin Toy was a Canadian manufacturer and distributor of toys. With great success came the need to expand, and the company eventually moved to a new home in the west end of Toronto. A family-owned business until 2001 when it was sold to a private investment group, shortly after the business was shut down the building was sold to Lanterra developments who repurposed it into the admired space that it is today.

The seven storey structure houses 213 original loft spaces with ceiling heights ranging from 9 and a half to 17 feet. The highest floors are home to soft loft additions (surprisingly not out of place), while the original floors benefit from the warehouse conversion, complete with exposed brick and wood and steel beams. Despite varying size, almost every suite in the building has unique and attractive characteristics.

This is a high end, extremely well-managed building, and boasting some of the largest and most urban-chic living spaces in popular Liberty Village, with some of the most modest per square foot common expenses in the city. Given the high-end finishes, long list of amenities and the hot Liberty Village Location, it’s no wonder that suites are rarely offered and that values remain high.

What We LOVE: A few years ago, condo fees were actually drastically REDUCED (almost unheard of in Toronto), following a full energy retrofit of the building. Toy Factory remains the only real hard loft option in Liberty Village, as most of the funky century warehouses and factories have been converted to offices and commercial use.

What We Don’t: Traffic in Liberty Village continues to worsen as more buildings go up and limited streets (and parking) remain the same as always.
